Today, Wednesday the 7^th of May, Australian Goth Punks The Wrath release ‘Now That You’re Gone’ the new single from their third full-length album, ‘Into the Arms of Oblivion’ out Friday the 30^th of May. ‘Now That You’re Gone’ is a haunting punk rockabilly track that weaves raw emotion with high energy.

Tommy Creeper says,

For 22 years, The Wrath have been a relentless force in Australian punk/rock, igniting chaos since 2003 and proving they are built to last. From hazy beginnings, they have conquered Australia and Japan, and now they’re gearing up to drop their third full-length album, Into the Arms of Oblivion, out May 30th, 2025—a fresh chapter in their storied run.
This is not a band that fits neatly into boxes. The Wrath fuse punk, rock, metal, rockabilly, hardcore, goth, and industrial with a fearless edge, earning respect across scenes and tearing down genre walls.

Their live legacy speaks volumes—sharing stages with heavyweights like The Misfits, Tiger Army, Lagwagon, and The 69 Eyes, and leaving their mark on festivals like Big Day Out, Dead of Winter, and Wallapolooza.

Their 2015 album Disillusions and Resolutions—tracked by Sid Constantine, mixed by Govinda Doyle, and mastered by Mathew Gray—unleashed fan-favourites “Misgivings are Through” and “Blood On Your Hands,” sparking their first international jaunt through Japan’s punk underground.

The Wrath kept rolling with “Long Time Dead” in 2019, then dropped “Wrong Side” in 2022—a prescient gut-punch with a self-produced animated video that screams defiance. Even as the world flipped upside down, they adapted, landing a standout gig at Movieworld’s Fright Nights on the Gold Coast.

Embracing snippets of punk, rock and psychobilly, Wrong Side finds The Wrath firmly doing everything right, with their trademark energy and snarling charm bouncing at every step, while also lyrically commenting on the wild ol’ world we all continue to live in.

With the track written well before the pandemic, when it came time for the group to conjure an accompanying music video, the best laid plans saw the group, consisting of vocalist Tommy Creeper, guitarist Spectre Deano, guitarist Carina Acquarola, double bassist The Count and drummer Dan Briffa, turn their hand to COVID-friendly animation; a decision that resulted in pure Wrath ghostly goodness, but one that also saw the band testing every inch of their creative facets.

“Obviously the last couple of years for everybody in bands and everyone in general has really just been wild,” shares vocalist Tommy Creeper. We’ve sort of been sitting on this for a little bit just not really knowing what to do as a band or what to do when everything was taken away. So, it was a weird time for us to actually sort of just sit on our hands a little bit and just go: why are we doing this? And we just reassessed everything, that was kind of all part of it as well.”

“Our usual thing is that we just record stuff, put some stuff out, get on planes and just keep doing our thing – and then that was all taken away. So then you sort of go: hang on, what are we even doing? Why are we jamming every week? What are we doing? And so that’s where this video came from, this was what our time went into over that time during COVID. And I wrote this song before COVID, it was entirely written and recorded it before COVID was even a thing.”

A song eerily relevant to a world gripped with turmoil and uncertainty on a daily basis, Wrong Side’s music video was initially envisioned somewhat differently before Creeper and Co. turned to the pre-existing artistic talents already available in The Wrath HQ.

“I was already thinking what we could do during COVID, and then the ball dropped and it was like: oh, I think I know what we can do for a video. I’ve got a good idea now.”

We try and do things differently to keep ourselves interested as well. And this is another one of those things where we’re like: yep. What could go wrong? I mean, Halloween’s all year round for us anyway!

“I did have another idea before this animated idea came to life,” shares Creeper. “I had a bit of an idea of what we could do for a film clip, but then lockdowns happened and we couldn’t get together. So, I was like: whoa, we have to do something. It was, like I was saying before, just a reassessment of everything, but then just changing your goals and going: okay, well, let’s be creative with what we’ve got, we can’t get together, but this person can do this, and that person can do that – let’s get this a crack, what do you reckon, can we do it?

“Carina did all the drawings of all the characters, she’s very artistic, she does stuff on the side outside of the band. Deano is a whiz on the computer, he’s done a little bit of animation before in the past. So, he went: yeah, can’t be too bad? And I was like: alright, and I’ll just get a camera out and I’ll take whatever photos we need taking for all the layers and all the stuff. And that’s pretty much as easy as it was. But it wasn’t until we started really getting into it and going: ohhh, this is gonna take ages. We didn’t really know what we were getting into until we really started. I’m a little scarred from the experience to be honest.”

While creating the animated video entirely themselves proved to be much harder than they could’ve initially imagined, the band embraced the challenges and learning curves, throwing everything they had into the final end result. And, fittingly, the final product is wholeheartedly a reflection that holds true to the DIY beliefs that The Wrath has stuck to for close to two decades.

And if you fancy catching The Wrath busting out their new tune in an extremely appropriate setting, Gold Coast fans are in for a treat later this year when the group sees another long-time plan realised – and it couldn’t be more on brand.

“We’ve got some shows coming up, but we’ve specifically got something coming up for Halloween that we’ve had in the works for the last few years that has also been postponed multiple times,” reveals Creeper. “We got asked to play at Movie World for their Fright Nights for Halloween, we’re gonna be playing like every event!”

“It’s insanity, I don’t even know what we signed up for, but they approached us a few years ago about doing it, just because of our aesthetic. I thought it was a joke to be honest when we first got asked, but they were like: yeah, look, usually we hire musicians and kind of spook them up, but we’ve come across your band and we don’t need to do anything to you guys, would you be interested? It turned out to be for real!

“It’s gonna be really different to what we’re used to, but we’re obviously looking forward to it. It’s gonna be with all the bells and whistles and whatever Movie World throws at us with pyrotechnics and all this sort of stuff. And we’ll be playing like four sets a night.”

THE OTHER FESTIVAL: COG, Osaka Punch & More, The Tivoli, Brisbane 28/01/23

I make it back to the main Roadsick stage just in time for The Wrath who take the stage and instantly grab everyone’s attention with their very own brand of horror punk rock. The dual guitars and double bass rock out the punk rock riffs hard and the drums maintain a solid beat to pull it all together.

Frontman Tommy owns the stage travelling from side to side and front to back and Deano gives me a quick wink as I head to the front of the stage to get a little more involved. That wasn’t creepy at all. I’m trying to figure what he is going to climb this time around as he usually finds somewhere dubious to position himself, and let’s be honest, he needs to do something to draw every male in the room’s eyes from Carina on guitar at the other side of stage. This band is always one hell of a good time, and they try a new track out on the crowd which is an absolute banger to which the crowd respond with a massive cheer as the track closes out. A slower track follows and shifts the mood back a little, but as the next song rocks off Deano leaves the stage and runs amok in the crowd riffing like a madman before making his way back for some “woah woah woahs”. The last couple of tracks rock out like a mother fucker and Tommy invites the crowd to come get drunk with them after the set, but not before Deano positions himself precariously on top of the side-fill speaker stack. It’s always carnage, but one day one of those speaker stacks is gonna fall and’s it’s gonna be absolute carnage. We can only hope though, can’t we!

Back with a brand new single, The Wrath are as punchy and as rock ‘n’ roll loving as ever.

Releasing the video for Long Time Dead, we’re getting a monochrome offering of the super-charged stylings of the Gold Coast rockers, but there’s a lot more to be unraveled from this assumingly sparse visual experience, as singer Tommy Creeper explains.

Creeper wrote Long Time Dead after some personal issues he experienced. This rapid, sometimes groovy song, is a bit of a pick-me-up for him and anyone else who has had some troubles. “It’s really just a note to say live your life to the fullest, in the now,” says Creeper.

“Anything that doesn’t contribute to your happiness or you being the best version of you just needs to be left for dead. That’s where the idea for the lyrics came from, because you are a long time dead, you’ve got one shot.”

The lyrics of the song could indicate some complexity and, dare it be said, a lot of colour, and yet The Wrath have gone with a simple shoot for the video. “That was a concept that Luke Sorensen, who directed the video, came up with,” says Creeper. “He wanted to do something different–there’s a lot of people going all out and chucking everything in, using CGI and all this stuff—he just thought ‘Let’s just let the lyrics do its thing and make it really stripped back, and go with that.’”

In stripping stuff back visually, The Wrath are still able to get across everything that intended in sound and sentiment. “I think he [Sorensen] did a really good job in capturing that,” says Creeper. “Just to bring it back and let the words do its thing. It’s what you see is what you get, when you come see us live and get that gritty feeling, as opposed to chucking stuff in for the sake of it.”

As for marking where The Wrath are at in their career, Long Time Dead is very much the band going back to their roots and sharing the influences they grew up on. “No experimental rollercoaster ride, I just wanted to write some straight up rock ‘n’ roll songs.

“Keep it simple, keep it catchy, and just have some fun instead of getting too complex and getting too far into it–why does it need to be? Let’s just write a cool rock ‘n’ roll song!”

And it is just that. Long Time Dead has the straight up rock ‘n’ roll, but with hints of punk and a rockabilly undertone, but The Wrath have of course gone with a little horror-pop flavour, too. It’s where the band, says Creeper, aren’t just comfortable, but perform at their best. “It’s just what our sound evolved to be,” says Creeper. “We’ve just kind of gradually evolved into what we sound like, but there was no intention of being a certain genre.

“When we go to write something we don’t say ‘I really want to write something of a certain genre’, this is our influences and what we like as individuals and it’s just coming out. This is the music we like and like to play, it’s just as simple as that.”

Groovy as the new single is, it doesn’t mark the approach of a new album. Instead, The Wrath have decided to release new music as singles for the remainder of the year. “I think how people consume music has changed, there’s no real pressure to make albums anymore,” says Creeper. “We’ve done a couple of albums and it’s a long, hard, and expensive undertaking. It doesn’t seem to be what a lot of people are doing now, they’re taking the model of putting singles or EPs out to stay visible.

“That’s what we want to get back to doing—writing, putting singles out, and touring, and being the live touring band that we are.”

With a stretch of shows between now and October, Dead Of Winter Festival is the first instance where The Wrath will perform the new single live, pulling from their back catalogue, too. “Being a festival, you’ve only got a short amount of time, so it’s not like we can go on a big roller coaster and dig back deep, so we have to pick songs that are gonna punch people fast, and that’s how this festival set really goes.”

This is Carina from The Wrath.

While it’s great to feel encouraged and inspired by external factors, like idols and influential people, Carina is a firm believer that how you talk to yourself and understanding your feelings and thoughts is just as, if not more, important towards empowerment! That’s something that Carina has always tried to be conscious of, especially after issues with bullying in her early life. “I had a lot of unnecessary fear before joining my first rock band, being a male dominated scene I just assumed I wouldn’t be good enough to try out for a band or at least not good enough to get a spot over a male guitarist. What I was doing was grossly undervaluing the hard work I’d put in and having very little faith in my ability. Perhaps due to a lack of female role models or idols in my life and maybe from also carrying around a massive amount of negative self talk due to years of bullying in my past; regardless, this behaviour wasn’t serving me. I think women can be empowered by keeping close watch on their inner dialogue, by being kinder to themselves, having more faith in their abilities and learning to recognise when your self talk is actually causing you to pause in life instead of progress. When I finally fought through the fear, I realised most people you meet in rock ‘n’ roll are actually extremely open and accepting due to also feeling like an outcast at some point in life, regardless of gender.” The message that Carina wants everyone to know is; never press pause. While life isn’t always 100% fair, we are lucky to live in a much more accepting time with much more opportunity for women. If you have a passion for something, take each day as an opportunity to move towards that goal and validate your hard work with a feeling of pride and accomplishment. You can do whatever the hell you want to do!
